Once upon a time, there was Hindi film cinema — sometimes merry, sometimes not, but always clean.

Then came Jism.

Let’s start with the Govind Menon-directed Khwaish, starring Himanshu Mallik, which explores the issue of pre-marital sex. ‘‘If you don’t want to have sex before getting married, **** it, let’s get married,’’ is the film’s take on the topic.

In this context, Deepak Tijori’s Oops! is another movie to watch out for. After all, it is based on the lives of three male-strippers — a topic which has, so far, been taboo territory for Hindi films.

Then, director Pankaj Parashar is ready to roll out his Indian remake of Basic Instinct later this year.

Moving on to the technical side, in the world of independent and small-budget films, one word keeps popping up — it’s called ‘jump’. Is there a ‘jump’ in the film, ask those in the business.

The jargon refers to a peg that can be used to draw the audience to theatres. And nothing sells like sex! So much so, at film festivals in India, films with ‘jumps’ are the ones that boast of ‘houseful’ signs.

Still, it is only in small-budget films that sex scenes can be a potent weapon. For, if a Rs 10 crore movie is being made, producers will go by the formula, jism or no jism.

pankaj.kapoor2000@indiatimes.com
